Many of us start our new year with grand intentions of becoming fitter and healthier. These healthy habits might be great for our body, but they can be hard to stick too especially if we are not enjoying what we are eating. Here are five foods that tantalize the taste buds while helping to rejuvenate our body.

Oats

The dairy industry’s damaging role in our environment is now a matter of scientific consensus. Alongside this, the startling fact that approximately 65% of all humans have a reduced ability to break down lactose within their gut makes cow’s milk less and less appealing. Alternatives to cow’s milk have exploded in popularity. Oat milk is high in fiber and cholesterol free making it a good choice if you want to reduce your lactose intake.

Microgreens

Microgreens also referred to as micro herbs, or vegetable confetti has been around for a long time. However, they have exploded in popularity recently and were noted in Today.com’s food trends for 2021. The micro varieties often contain higher nutrient levels than bigger varieties of vegetables. Microgreens vary hugely in taste, meaning there is a flavor out there, whatever your palette. The microgreens are also good for adding texture and color to a large dish like a pasta bowl or as a garnish to a curry.

Sourdough

If you suffer frequently from an upset stomach, then sourdough is a good replacement for other bread varieties. The bread contains a lot of fiber but also comes with the added benefit of naturally occurring bacteria which are good for your gut. Choose darker wholewheat flours like rye or spelt to get extra fiber. Sourdough can be incorporated into your diet easily, as an accompaniment to a soup or as part of a healthy breakfast with eggs cooked as you like them.

Kelp

Kelp is a large brown seaweed that grows in coastal waters. You may have already tasted it in sushi, but kelp flavor can differ depending on where it is sourced. Kelp is high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Alongside this kelp is a fantastic source of iodine, which is beneficial for your metabolism and boosts your brain activity. Kelp can also boost your immune system, which is hugely beneficial in 2021. The ingredient can be added raw to a salad, cooked in dishes much like kale, or blended into a vegetable juice.

While all of these ingredients are flavorsome, they must be introduced as part of a balanced diet to ensure they benefit you and will become part of your new healthy eating regime.
